Article on Minimum Wage In the Metro Newspaper (Calgary version)

I saw an article in today's Metro newspaper that talks about how the minimum wage in Alberta has now risen to $9.40 per hour. So I thought I'd do some math on my calculator to see if people on AISH are recieving at least $9.40 per hour.   The way I did the calculation is.. I pretended that a person on AISH could work for 40 hours per week. I divided $1188 by 4 so I could figure out what a person on AISH would recieve per week. Then I divided that amount by 40 to see how much they would be earning if they worked a regular full time 40 hour work week. Here is what I came up with.

$1188 / 4= $297 per week is what a person on AISH is currently getting.

$297/ 40= $7.40 per hour.

If AISH was considered a job- people on AISH would be earning $297 per week in gross income if they worked a 40 hour work week. They would be paid $7.40 per hour. This is $2.00 less then the new minimum wage in Alberta.
